There are some people reading this who would cheerfully choke you on your own rope chain. I personally was not feeling that song, the video you came with was fresh in its own right though.
Rope Chain was a great start to my career. It was a track I wrote about 18 months ago and we had a great concept for the video and so rolled with it. It’s a catchy track that put me further into the music world. Since then I have made another 15 tracks which will shape my debut album A.D.H.D. I have experimented with electro, indie, funk and hip hop. I think that people will be surprised at the direction I have taken on my album if they have only heard/seen Rope Chain.
Regardless of what people think of Master Shortie, they can not deny your hustle. You’re young, UK, unsigned and making some nice moves. What have you been up to recently?
I went on tour with Hadouken! in July across the UK. I didn't know what to expect, I didn't know how the indie/electro kids would react to me. Thankfully they were brilliant, I got an amazing response on every show, there is a clip here. It was a great experience to play to a wider audience and find out how life on the road really is.
MTV have also been really supportive of my career thus far and we ran a remix contest together in August. We received some brilliant entries. Here is the winning mix.
Oh yeah, I have also made two music videos for my debut single 'Dead End'. One video is a mash-up of the footage from the Hadouken! tour and will be released online soon, first at ATCN. The second video was shot in a disused Hackney hospital and is being edited now.
Who inspires you musically?
My favourite band is Spearhead, I also love Finley Quaye, Kanye West, Mos Def, Tracey Chapman, Lupe Fiasco, Blur and The Verve.
Who do you think has NEXT on the UK music scene?
There is an electro-pop act called The Filthy Dukes who I really like. They are in the mould of Hot Chip, Justice and Daft Punk. I have actually been playing live with them at a few festivals this summer. I have heard about half their album and I think they will be big in 2009.
There you have it, it's simple really, Master Shortie - DEAD END, hate it or love it, what do you think...
The question is does he SINK or SWIM?
