7 Minutes of Fury!

It's monday morning and I am feeling low... like below sea level low. I can't think of anything more inspiring than Michael Jordan beating the buzzer to kick start my day. If any readers/tribers are lagging out there, just watch the video below and you will feel a boost!

Did you feel it?
If you didn't feel the boost, then sorry I can't help you.

Dels :)

I don't understand... I've never got the whole Jordan thing - then again, I'm not a fan of any team sport, let alone basketball!

Clav when I read your first line I was like "WHAT!!" but I guess if sports isn't your thing then that's fair enough!!

People talk about who's the greatest ever sportsman, and a lot of people argue how can you compare people fairly when they all do different sports have different abilities,etc.. in a lot of poles Daily Thompson will be top (he was one of my heroes growing up) and recently I read an article I think from the Wall Street Journal where they had assessed all the sportsmen on the planet right now and rated them on different things and they ranked Roman Sebrle at No.1, who like Thompson is a decathelete.

But the reason I rank Jordan as my No.1 of all time (although John Barnes is my all time favorite) is that in Basketball you can play over 80 games in a season, sometimes 3 to 4 games in week, one night you may be on the west coast, then a long flight to east coast for the next nights game, (fair enough the rotate players throughout the game and your not all out for 90mins), Jordan throughout his career would be consistently 30-40 points each night, rebounds, assists, all that!! He came into the league when the Bulls were nothing and along with Pippen,etc.. formed a Supreme Team, then he left went to try his hand at Baseball (didnt go too well!!lol) and returned to the league and had the same consistancy and the Bulls dominated once more.

Interesting fact no. 1 - Jordan always wanted to be a baseball player, not a basketball player... strange but true! And I actually AM a sports fan - I just don't get "team" sports, that's all! I back anything quantifiably individual - particularly athletics, tennis, golf even F1 (to an extent).

My biggest problem with the world's main team sports (football, baseball, basketball, US football and Hockey) is that people seem to be more interested in the money and hype that surround the sport rather than the sport itself which then leads to a very skewered perception where one player gets more heat than another due to his/her "pulling power" as opposed to their absolute talent - for example although Becks is the most famous footballer on the planet would anyone say he's the best footballer for what he does??? I doubt it. Mind you, I'm aware this problem is starting to spill over into the more individual type events too - step forward Anna Kournikova...

Oh, and Daley Thompson is definitely a hero of mine along with Roman...

Also, before I forget, hen level of corruption in high level sport (match-fixing, "injuries", steroid abuse etc) is getting to the point where one can never be sure who the "greatest" really is...

Sorry, forgot to sign my last post!

See what your sayin' although I think the money becomes an issue when you get into the sport and start getting involved with advice from Agents,etc.. when your a kid you will never hear anyone say they want to be a footballer, etc because the money is good, it's all because they love the game, besides the truly great sports stars will always be the ones who strive to be the best at what they do.

Another guy who I rank as one of the best is Lance Armstrong. I hated that bloke when he first got into cycling, I thought he was brash, aggrogant (not always a bad thing to have a bit of in sport) and really wasn't that good. I found it funny when I read his book years later that after he had cancer and he looked back he thought he was like that too!! In a way him getting cancer lead him to become better at his sport, because before his body wasn't built to be an all round bike rider, but with the cancer he lost a load of weight and muscle and his body grew differently when he rehabilatated, and he went onto to win 7 Tour De Frances after the cancer, which to me is one of the hardest events in sport even without having overcome a life threatening disease.. Brilliant!!

Clave just read your last post, I think the "greatest" like most things is always goin to be subjective, plus people rate different people for different things, or for what they stood for or came through (Ali's obviosuly another one). I agree with you on the steriods thing, I was watching the Athletics over the weekend and had mixed emotions watching Dwain Chambers, because a part of me wants to see him win, but the other half thinks he knew what he was doing when he took drugs and he knew the consequences so you have to live with them, also he didnt need to do it he was world class without them, look at his times now he runs world class times without even really racing as no one invites him to the circiut events around Europe.

Apologies for all these long nerdy sports posts!!lol
