definitely a whip round for Marvin to bring up his hova game:

lyrical intelligence - check 22 twos on reasonable doubt not the definitive song but his word play kills it.

There isn't a rhyme by the immortal Jonzi D or an argument by anyone that could be crafted well enough to dispute the fact that Jay-Z is one of the BEST MCs of ALL TIME to ever bless a mic. The man is incapable of putting out a single or album that doesn't go platinum a gazillion times over. His body of work is untouchable. Plus Jigga's ability to shift flows is incredible. His tales of business, hustlin', flossin', politics, struggle, street life and success are so intricately woven that each time you listen to him it's a new experience. Compound that with his impeccable rhyme style with his lyrical references--vaster than an encyclopedia--and you have one Hiphop phenomenon whose dynasty cannot be overthrown.

The "Jockin' Jay-Z" track is dope like liquid coke. Most of the flack that Jay gets from certain people (shame on them all!) is about his content being dominated with materialism. Although they may have a point with certain tracks here and there, it is somewhat an exaggerated truth. The problem is what someone once described as "audience energy association." Basically, once you become successful, the audience relates to the energy of that success, and unless you match or supercede that success with another energy, the affiliation will always be with the most successful first impression. This is why Eddie Murphy couldn't make that transition into singing, and why Big Will Smith is viewed as an actor before he's viewed as an MC. Jay-Z's energy is viewed as a successful hustler turned rapper. Even though the classical, lyrical emcee braggadocio is there, he's made far too many references to what his struggle in the streets was. Therefore, the undercurrent of who he is could be perceived as being bigger than what he's saying. This is also reinforced by the sentiments of rooting for the hustler when he's broke, because everyone can sympathize with the hunger, and then rooting against the hustler when he's rich, because when you're not hungry anymore it turns into what's perceived as greed. Unfortunately, Jay doesn't help his case by dropping so many money, car, diamond and name-brand references in his rhymes....but one thing he is right about is the fact that when he flips the subject matter, no-one does it better.

Maybe the substance in Jay-Z gets convoluted in the duality of the imagery. It's tough to get fuckers to listen when they've already got a preconceived notion of what the rhyme's gonna be about. So just to finish off my lecture, I have to concur with Biz and say that, Jay-Z, like most true emcees, is not a one-dimensional character. If you listen to how he puts his words together, and the things he makes reference to outside of street colloquialisms, you hear an extremely high level of worldly intelligence. Like he said himself, he dumbed down for his audience to double his dollars, they criticized him for it, but they all yell HOLLA! Plus, as a businessman (and a business, man!) he is one of the smartest men in industry. Like Chuck D and many others, I will always say: Jay-Z is truly ONE OF THE GREATEST EMCEES EVER IN THE GAME!

@anon, don't explain shit, mate. if i ever need to answer jay-z haters again, i'm copying and pasting your post...infact, if you'd have written this a few months ago i could've used it for my dissertation on business, commerce and art!!

lol i'll get reasonable doubt, wouldn't mind your monies though i'm student poor at the mo

reason i was never into jay-z is cos i got into nas around the time of their beef, and i've always been biased as hell when it comes to that, and that ain't ever gonna change. really dislike the jay-z/ linkin park mix, i think they were great seperate, average together, some songs just annoyed the crap out of me, then he released kingdom come and the songs he released from that were a waste of time,so didn't bother getting that, got american gangster, which has some good songs, but the album ain't that great(have played 'i know' a million times though). bringing me to now realising the man maybe as good as people have suggested he was

there a life story you didn't ask for, well you got it anyway.

peace
