The legendary Rakim talks to DJ Green Lantern before one of the 'Rock The Bells' shows. Pretty cool interview, as you don't see many with Rakim. Plus rap wouldn't be what it is today if it wasn't for this man, so shut your mouth and watch it ...please.
I'm interested to know who you lovely readers(I'm sure the tribers will make their voices heard as well) believe has had the single biggest impact on Hip-Hop since it's invention ...is it Rakim? He defiantly brought a completely different flow to rap in the 80's.
NOBODY was rapping like Rakim!
Thoughts?

interesting. Rap has changed alot through the years, but I feel Rakim has had the biggest impact on rap music, like you said ginger kid, everyone had the kind of 80's old skool flow, until Rakim came along.
But RUN DMC took hip-hop to a whole other level.
But then Public Enemy came through aswell. And in recent years dudes like Kanye and Pharrell have changed hip-hop.
FOR REAL.
Run...... run, run, run, run DMC
Afrika Bambaataa, J Dilla or Q-tip.
Also a lot of the japanese producers doing the rounds (Nujabes, Shin-Ski etc) not particularly for their effect on mainstream hip hop but for pure innovative qualities and pushing the experimental boundaries of it with jazz, neo soul etc etc influences. Hard question though as I dont think theres one single definitive artist that has shaped hip hop.
yes....pharrell.
I don't think you could say one single person has had the biggest impact on hip hop, right from the start you had guys like Kool Herc, then Sugar Hill Gang, Grndmaster Flash who brought it to a wider audience. Then you have not just emcees but guys like Rick Rubin and Russell Simmons who built something out of nothing and gave us PE (with Chuck D and his massive influence) Beastie Boys, LL, Run DMC,etc all of whom have changed the face of hip hop in some way and made it grow. Then comes Rakim, Big Daddy Kane, KRS who took it up another level who in turn influenced Biggie, Nas, Jay,etc
Theres loads more you could mention Premo, Pete Rock, Red Alert, Marley Marl, etc then even someone like Ted Demme and co who created Yo! Mtv Raps again breaking trough to the mainstream with what at the time was not really a mainstream music.
Theres many more names that Im sure people will mention too!
Basically what Im saying is that theres been many you have changed the game and influenced it, and if one person posts up naming a particular person as the single influence there will be many others all of whom will site different people.
Nice comment one. I think u hit the nail on the head.
But let's discuss.
I think Grandmaster Flash and RUN DMC had the single biggest impacts on hip-hop.
I was having a debate with some Tribe Members last saturday, and said that RUN DMC are the greatest hip-hop group of all time.
Put it this way, the room went silent and got angry, with everyone shouting wu-tang at me.
I will stand by RUN DMC! Nobody spat it harder than RUN back in the day.
Shouts to Rubin and Russell Simmons!
big post.
jockin' GK.
I love Wu Tang and 36 chambers is one of the greatest hip hop albums of all time but are they 'greater' than RUN DMC, obviously you can't compare their styles and there are guys in Wu Tang with better word play etc than RUN DMC, but would you have Wu Tang if it wasn't for guys like RUN DMC.
If you havent already checked for it check out RUN DMC's performance of Beats to the Rhyme on Yo MTV Raps, I saw it again on base the other week after ages trying to find it on You Tube and being to lazy to trail my old Mtv Raps VHS' for it, it is dope!!!
Run DMC kill the live show. The energy is uncomparable. Man i would have loved to be around when they where at there height.
Also in your 'greatest' group debate who was fighting PE's corner?
I tried to fight public Enemy's corner aswell. They changed hip-hop with the whole policital rap slant.
It doesn't get publisised but they killed RUN DMC for a year or two. People where only buying political hip-hop once P.E came out.
And 'Takes a national of million..' was ovted greatest ever hip-hop album so they have to be incontention. Definetly had a HUGE impact on hip-hop, just don;t think they changed the game as much as RUN DMC, but changed the world outside of hip-hop more.
Saw Public Enemy live earlier in the year also, THEY KILLED IT! SERIOUSLY AMAZING!
*nation
run dmc invented...
rock + rap.
Yeah, they also invented nu-metal.
Are you being sarcastic??
Because I will think you find they actually did invent rock & rap. Who done it before them? Well to be precise Rick Rubin invented it, RUN DMC did it.
Fall back.
soulja boy
and we "still wanna know when the album comin out...."
10 years and running... SHEESH... Rakim needs to get on with it...
RAKIM is a gangster for real though...
Rakim is the god. Without him no Nas.
R.I.P Jam Master Jay.
fuck rakiiiim.
50 cent will murk that old dude.
50 murk Rakim ha ha ha ha
50 couldn't murk anyone right now - he's a spent force at the moment. Has anyone heard Terminate on Sight?
Oh and just for the record I was next to Rakim and Green Lantern while this was being filmed!!!!!!!!
