FILM ON ATCN: La Haine

For the first time in around a month I'm having a day off and yes I'm finding it hard to stop thinking about work...and you guys. So to take my mind of things i wacked on a DVD and lost myself for an hour and thirty seven minutes with 1995's La Haine (hate).

As we seem to continuously debate, argue and compare experiences with film I figured it only fair every once in a while we here at ATCN pick a film and ask you guys to pick it apart as you always do! The movie launched the career of Vincent Cassel and opened my eyes to not only the issues surrounding immigrant teenagers of both African and Arab decent but French Cinema as a whole.

So, have you seen it? Loved it? hated it?

Thoughts?

I'm with anon 1 - The opening for me is cinema gold.

As for Transformers like most Hollywood the last one was straight McDonalds. It was OK at the time but totally unmemorable and probably a waste of money.

The sequence where they were hiding around the house?? - Garbage

The sequel? I expect more crap.
I'll still be there opening week though like the sucker I am hoping for something more...

Remember seeing the trailer for La Haine when BBC Two were gonna show it. If my sketchy memory serves me correctly, they had clips of a DJ cutting up Nas' "Represent" in the window of a tower block, banlieue style. Stayed up on a school night (without my parent's knowing, had a TV in my bedroom) to watch it and like Illsun, was blown away.

One of my top 10 all time favourite films and by far my favourite foreign language film.

Good pick Biz!

This film is tough. Coincidentally watched it in France a week before the National Front nearly won the presidential election in 2002 - I was out on the street protesting. The very thought of this film sends shivers down my spine - very powerful

Nah, I was saying "Mmm" as in "Mmm, tasty" - I can't wait for that joint to drop!!!

@ illsun - please define waste of money - do you mean waste of money as in what you spent to see it or waste of money regarding cost to make? I mean come on, grossing over $700 mill with a $150 mill investment is hardly a waste now is it!?

And I would also say given the fact that the SFX industry is becoming ever more prevalent in Hollywood, that film totally moves the game on visually - compare Transformers to say, the 2nd Fantastic 4 movie for example.
