Beyonce Scam?

This may well be 2 days old or three for those scrutinising e thugs who pay attention. But I really want the ATCN readers views on this...

L'Oreal are being slandered right now for apparently lighten Beyonce's skin in their recent ad campaign. L'Oreal are denying they lightened her skin and so far there has been no response from Beyonce.

More importantly she is promoting a hair product and is clearly wearing a lace front wig! For me that is what is really wrong with this picture...

Photobucket

A similar situation occurred when the first black model Donyale Luna appeared on the front cover of Vogue in the sixties. They had her cover most of her face to reportedly not 'offend' readers and pass her off as white. She went on to become the first black supermodel.

She's dope. She's appreciated.

Photobucket

This was an obvious wool over the eyes for that time, but are we seeing
the same thing occur or is it that Beyonce really is that complexion?
What would L'Oreal gain from lightening her skin? Is it all just a media hype?

Thoughts?

If they have, that is honestly disgusting. If they wanted a ten-a-penny white model, they should have got one, not taking away the natural beauty of a real black woman like beyonce.

Well L'Oreal changed Beyonce's voice over on their adverts a while back.

She sounded like a 35 year old woman with 3 kids. Then a few weeks later they put it back to her country twang.

She should of known from then...

i heard about that but this is some other shit!

'...If the truth is told the youth can grow, learn to survive until they gain control.'

If they really have lightened her skin, that is out of order. But why is Beyonce letting them do that anyway, surely she has to be put in question aswell as L'Oreal.

she looks white

this is a funny one. I have seen the amount of photoshopping that goes on to make white people look more tanned and here are L'Oreal making Beyonce clearly look whiter (or if i'm honest, she looks like she has a touch of rigor mortis about her in that 2nd pic)

The 'industry', or at least the thinking behind the glossies etc are a bunch of photoshopping tits, but, they aren't suffering for it are they? That's why I love the models on American Apparel- they are largely normal people and no weird stuff happens to their pics.

As for Beyonce copping some of the blame, i definitely think she should- don't think she didn't have a say in those pictures.

In terms of the responsisbility lying with her, I wonder what your opinions would be in terms of weave in general. Is creating a cleopatra-style shoulder length-mane a step towards trying to distance yourself from your heritage, is relaxing your hair the same, or is it a fashion/convenience choice? thoughts?

essay/2pence worth over!

ooooooo

don't know if I have the time as I am trying to bake!

But...yes let's talk about the ol weave. Yes I put my hand up to being a weave wearer in the past. It had something to do with being a hair model in the past and my obsession with having every colour of the rainbow in my hair.

Many years now I am now happily enjoying my hair. I think hose lace front wigs are disgusting and probably smell. People always want me to go back to weaves. But I stand defiant

My name is Shenanigan I used to wear weaves.

...might I add perm/straight hair.

That's a tricky subject. It's each to their own. Some connivence... like me (too impatient to wait for it grow out)some because they feel they are not beautiful without it.

Well Shenanigan .. may i be the first to say that i think you are absolutely beautiful with or without a weave! Good looking and intelligent .. what more can a man ask for ...

A read an article last night about 'Yung Berg' (you guys heard the madness right?) not being completely to blame when he said he doesn' like dark women. The person writing the article said that Yung Berg is a boob (no contest), but he was raised in a time where he was bombarded with images of light skinned women with weaves, being photoshopped to death.

I dont believe Beyonce is a victim, but I do believe she is starting to look a lot like 'the machine'. By the way in the first pic she is definitely wearing that gross organge 'spray on' tan stuff.

Being black has nothing to do with your complection or how you wear your hair. So, is she really distancing herself from her heritage with the weaves and the all the madness? I dont think so, but she is not helping the masses of young black women who will grow up thinking that if you are not wearing a weave, thos butt padding things (I dont know what they are called) or skinny then you are not beautiful.

As for Loreal: THEY KNOW DAMN WELL THAT THEIR PRODUCTS DONT WORK ON WEAVES!!! SHAMEFUL!

PS- excuse the essay length of the reply

On one hand, we must all accept that there has been a certain homogenising of what the media considers beautiful - Beyonce, J-Lo, Mariah and various other women in the public eye whose exact racial background could be described as "ambiguous" - therefore if a company decides to lighten/darken/clean up an image for a campaign why should Beyonce being allegedly "lightened" seen as any different to a mixed-race or white model "darkened"?? Photoshop is capable of many things including the ability to reshape a figure (word to Kate Winslet) or remove a mole/blemish/pimple or two (step forward early Alicia Keys)!

It could also be argued that the actual photo session's lighting, make-up and camera exposure etc was more than capable of rendering B as being lighter than she really is - would there still be the same outrage if that was the case? At what point does one draw the line between say lighting technique and Photoshop for example?

One the other hand, the fact that anyone would feel the need to lighten an image of B seems to be rather silly to me - we all know she's black after all! Who would be offended at an image of a black woman in a advert of that nature?!? Not Middle America surely; after all, these are the same people who would have voted Obama to become the Democrats Presidential candidate!

@ yeahisaidit - trust me on this: regardless of Beyonce being who she is, when one is being paid the sums of money she is to promote for a megalith like L'Oreal believe me, they, NOT B, have the last say, any blame really is gotta be placed at their door.

Notice I haven't even started on the weave issue - that's a WHOLE other post which will be longer than this one!!!!!

Clav.. your a comments masterpiece.!

please o please...give us the weave blueprint??

brazen said...

some good points there Mr Clav!!!

The thing is with all these products the advertisements are enhanced...watch them next time they come on tv look at the bottom of the screen for the tiny tiny tiny really hard to see writing......

mascara adverts - 'model is wearing eyelash extensions'

davina mccall in hair advert - 'davina is wearing extensions blah blah blah'

Beyonce is black but she is on the light side, the media have purposely used pics from when she has been sprayed with orange stuff or just come back off her hols to hype it up!!!!

Kelly Rowland is reppin for the DC laydeez with her promotion of Dark and Lovely!!!! Specks is an avid user of that shit!

I think people who are offended by this are being ridiculous. They made her skin lighter because its a lighter colour of hair. Imagine Beyonce's regular skin tone with that shade of hair. It would look stupid.
And for anyone who says "BLAHBLAHBLAH WHY DIDN'T THEY GET A WHITE MODEL INSTEAD!!!111111111111", would many people be as effective as Beyonce? You all know who she is from a glance!

Thanks for the kind words everyone!

As far as I'm concerned (and I don't care if any girl wants to put me on blast) weaves are devices of Beelzebub and his dark hordes.

Why am I so against them? In a word - deception. Do you know how many men's dreams I've shattered when I gently break it to them (for example) that Aaliyah's hair was in fact a weave!? It was something akin to watching the reaction of a child when they realise for the first time that Santa isn't real...

Now, as a black man (and a lover of black women) to all those out there who say "It's my hair beacause I bought it" I'll say this; I don't care what type of hair you have - long, short, straight, kinky, nappy, whatever - as long as it began life on YOUR scalp, not on the head of a poor Indian girl who grew her hair for 6 months then sold it to feed her family for a couple months... Real talk.

I'm not from the school of thought that subscribes to the notion that beauty amongst black women only consists of fair skin and "good hair" (ya'll know what I'm talking about!) therefore I don't wanna touch my girl's head and feel stitching or glue lines - 'llow dat bredrin!

And personally I'd take Kelly over Beyonce any day - many may disagree but I've always found her FAR more attractive...

my name is Sara' and i am a weave wearer, and i also think its nothing to be ashamed of...

as long as its worn well, and convincingly (hold tite certain Dalston culprits) i don't see a problem in enhancing what you already have. it makes life easier in general, (esp. in the mornings) and my own hair gets a break every now and then.

as for all this running hands through the hair talk, whether im with or without a weave (yes i am a weave wearer who has that option, surprise, we ain't all masking a yam' out head top) he knows that simply cannot go down.
-(insert head scarf in bed argument here...lol)-

i must admit, i do feel it for men though, what with inventions such as push up bras, spanx, and make up (now thats the REAL deceiver!) you must constantly be wondering.

p.s
Aaliyah had a weave??!?! WOW!

and as for that beyonce bull, they been playing musical skin colours with that girl for so many years now, im just fresh outta steam on that topic!

clav said...

@ Ms. saa - Fair enough, to each their own, but I still hate weaves. With an unbridled passion.

to be honest i don't know why people are so upset all of a sudden because its been happening from day. compare beyonce from early destiny's child to now and they are not the same colour. she's been getting lighter and lighter over the years.

having said that however compared to other pictures ive seen of her around now she looks the same colour in the loreal advert. find it strange that people wanna start making comments now

Hello all, before we talk about the lightening...let's talk about why the hell Beyonce agreed to promote a product for something that she does not and can never have...EUROPEAN HAIR...what the hell message is she sending to black women of all ages?

Especially black women in the Uk, where products for our hair are never advertised...all we get are the the subliminal messages from 99% of hair product adverts denouncing the frizz and promoting every other hair colour except natural black.

hmmmmm....
