BELIEVE THE HYPE

Just started re-reading this and realised I'd forgotten how fucking good it is.

If you've never got round to reading 1984, then I highly recommend you get your hands on a copy ASAP. 100% deserving of its 'Classic' status.

One word of warning though: Aspiring writers should proceed with caution. This is the kind of shit that makes you feel like you might as well just give up now.

ATCN Book Club, anyone?!

I've always secretly wanted to be part of a book club. Ever the since the days of the one they did on Richard and Judy.

Although erm, obviously I didn't occasionally, like, read the books on that or anything. Or, um, watch the show every day. No, no. Far too cool for any of that, me.

You know the bidnezz Phoebe! That's one of my all time favorites. So on point? Have you seen the lives of others? It's on the same steez, I def reccommend it if not.
@it's only me- are there any particular subjects or genres that you enjoy reading? I might be of assistance- I'm quite the bookworm.
@yeahisaidit- rich dad... is actually my current read. I reccommend it to all my friends. Time to get my $ right!

Phoebe said...

can i join ur book club please Phoebe?
LOL.

If so, I may start by reading this book! I have heard good things about this...

:)

oh yes phoebe. A book club would be quite fantastic. Can we all wear specs (well if i dont i cant actually read, so it's like so necessary) and oversized knitwear while sitting cross-legged and reciting passages from our most favourite novels?

brilliant.

@ Booga. The Lives of Others is PHENOMENAL. Best film I saw last year, I reckon.

@ Dels + illsun. Yesss! I thought it was just gonna be me and anonymous for a while there.

@ yeahisaidit. Do you live inside my imagination?!

Anonymous said...

Yeah Im into the book club idea too, would be cool, Im always lookin for good recommendations of reads from others!

Anonymous said...

Don't know about the over-sized knitwear though!!lol

Anonymous said...

And so the book club begins....

Lovin your work Phoebe !!!

Anonymous said...

@phoebe, you know what they say about great minds. I'm also thinking quite alot of plaid to go with the oversized cable-knits. What do you reckon?

and don't be ashamed about richard & judy's book club thing. If it wasn't for them, I wouldn't have read the Lost Art of Keeping Secrets. Oh chrrst I may catch the menopause if say too much stuff like this.

Book club is on, and I hope i'm in.

Can we do poems too?

Proud to be a geek.

@ Booga
I love any kind of educational reading material
Books where you learn something new i suppose
So any recommendations would be much appreciated!

Phoebe said...

How is this gonna work though? I post books I like and you comment of them? What if no-one comments? That might make me cry.

Anonymous said...

why don't you suggest a book and we all read it together?

oh no, that's primary school.

No seriously, is that a really cruddy idea?

i'm tired, can you tell.

my bedroom is a small library. its a fire hazard im sure.

i think wear glasses because i read too much.

phoebe im all in for helping with book club.

my inclination for reading american civil war books can be well and truly disguised.

laura said...

and i think we should start with some classic short stories....

the older the better... anything prior to 1923 is public domain, its pre copyright and they will be available to read online.

nobody likes to read for ages online, so thats why classic shorts are great.

i've got a couple in mind...

yes, all cool has been lost!

Count me in for the book club too, por favor.
@ it's only me- I'm going to have to reccommend "Unbowed" for starters. It's an autobiography by Wangari Maathi. She's a force to be reckoned with- a Kenyan scientist/activist who has put so much on the line whilst making strides to end/prevent droughts, environmental destruction, and social injustice. She not only recounts the details of her life, but has very insightful observations about the affects of colonialism, race, culture, etc. I also reccomend "Before the Mayflower" if you are at all a history buff. It's kind of written textbook style, but it's pretty good considering. If the childhood history courses in the UK are anywhere near as myopic as in the states, this is a good read to help round it out. If you want to check out a well written book for entertainment value, I reccommend "The Pinball Theory of the Apocalypse" by Jonathon Sellwood. It pokes fun at Hollywood, and it's accompanying "art" scene.
Coincidently, I just ordered 2 new pairs of dope glasses, and have a large sweater collection. I am ready. ;)
...so what's the first read?

@specks-fuck cool.

http://www.world-english.org/stories.htm

I am so excited. This calls for my cashmere blanket.

(note to self: i'm young, free and single. I have a good job, great friends and full use of all my limbs. It is a Friday night and here I am, indoors, online and getting excited over possibly being involved in a book club. Is that as wrong as it sounds?)

Swiftly moving on, who is going to pick the first one?

Excited? Yes-sir.

Phoebe said...

Short story idea is dope. I have to confess I'm not too well-versed on the genre though, so maybe Specks or yeahisaidit would like to suggest one to get the ball rolling?

Also- Specks, one of my modules at uni this September is on the American Civil War. Any book recommendations for me?!!!!
