Art on ATCN: Tony South

Unclear Family

The above pictures are by artist Tony South who paints with oil on canvas. South claims to be a social onlooker and not a social worker, he paints what he sees. He throws a dash of dark humor into his work and 'Lobster' has to be my favourite, swiftly followed by 'A.C.A.B' (all coppers are bastards)... Its not the kind of art work i'd have on my walls... I could simply walk to the local park to get this picture... but its interesting as social commentary, which is executed really well nonetheless.

To deviate only slightly, my sister got bit on the bum by a dog on wednesday night. I had to take her to the hospital to get a tetanus shot and was subjected to some incredibly loud riff raff in the waiting room. Absolutely true story...

More from Tony South here.

Having been familiar with his work for a long while, I'm still undecided on it.

He gets points for MADDD brush work though.

i think recently we've all been blinded by some great stencil artists and their particular style. I for one forgot how amazingly intricate and detailed oil could be...

His painting style reminds me of Rockwell, which would be totally cheesy with different subjects, but it's absolutely ironic and appropriate in this context. Love 'em, esp. A.C.A.B.
