"Soulja boy is fresh ass hell and is actually the true meaning of what hip hop is sposed to be. He came from the hood, made his own beats, made up a new saying, new sound and a new dance with one song. He had all of America rapping this summer. If that ain't Hip Hop then what is? A bunch of wannabe keep it real rappers that ain't even relevant, recycling samples trying to act like it's 96 again and all they do is hate on new shit? Niggas always talk about the golden age but for a 13 year old kid, this is the golden age!!! That song was so dope cause everything he said had a hidden meaning... that's Nas level shit... he just put it over some steel drums which is also some Nas shit if you had the 2nd album cassette with the bonus track "Silent Murder" on it. In closing... new niggas get ya money$$ Keep this shit fresh and original.... ain't no fuckin' rules to this shit and that's what real hip hop is to me."

TRUE meaning of what hip hop is supposed to be?
Since when was true hip hop about fucking hoes, getting paper and murdering any bitch that gets in your way?
Correct me if im wrong, but I thought Hip hop was a reflection of self, not your bank balance.
Nas was right. Hip Hop IS dead. And soulja boi, you just put the last nail in the coffin
Some good points as in the way he's built it from the ground up but it has no substance, and if your a 13 year old kid now and Souljah Boy is part of your 'golden age' then I feel sorry for you because how can songs that go 'yah trick yah,get out my face' have hidden meanings, it's just dumbed down hip hop. If your into it then cool each to their own but I'll be sticking to crews like Halls of Justus,etc..
I think Kanye likes stirring it up anyway and sometimes just makes statements to get everyone goin'
It's excited from Kanye once again.
Props to Soulja Boy for doing what he loves and making serioussss coin from it but to describe his sound as real hip hop is kinda derogatory imo.
sink and drown!
Joell Ortiz got it right:
'Accidentally stand on your white sunglasses. This is HIP HOP....Carhartt jackets, Timbaland boots unlaced, us still fighting police brutality, chicken wings and french fries, RIP pieces on the handball court....This is hop hop'
Kanye your chatting rubbish. Surely your too busy dropping more shit collabs to know about real hip hop. I dont even wanna hear you say Nas' name.
Kangay West.
I met Soulja Boy late last year - it was one of the most depressing days of my life.
Has it come to this??
I find it so ironic each generation is bemoaned by the previous one for not having it as good - witness people who lived in Liszt's/Sinatra's/The Beatles eras for example - it's not to say that we don't appreciate these artists as being genius today but they'll never hold the same meaning for us as those who "were there" - regardless of how good their music is.
The way I see it is every generation has a "Golden Age" and say what you will but I (grudgingly) am with Kanye on this one; is it not fair to say that as culture/technology etc has allowed music to evolve the meaning of music in society has evolved too???
To me, all music is just another form of human expression and, like language, as time goes on with different words taking on different meanings, words and phrases disappearing from and being inducted into popular lexicon the same can be said of music and in particular Hip-Hop... But hey, what do I know!?
Cheers,
Clav.
Hip-hop has always been about freedom of expression. There are no boundaries. What is 'real' Hip Hop?
The term 'real' has just become another cliche in my eyes.
I just think rappers/fans need to stop with this whole 'hip-hop is dead' and 'lets remember when it was good' arguments. Hip Hop today is never going to be what it was in the 90s... and Hip Hop in the 90s could never be what it is today.
Lets move forward!
Soulja boy is wack! He's a commericial artist & he is just there to be famous & get money .
I aint hating on him but to class soulja boy as hip hop is a complete joke & waste of time !
I know hip hop isnt the same as the 90's but I would have thought it would have been elevated even higher than what it was!
now I doubt that because its all about "22 inch rims , big booty girls in skimpy clothing , the whole "gangsta" cliche "
Urghhh! Talk about playing up to the stereotypes
i agree with dels... we may not like soulja boy, but who are we to tell him he is not hip hop?
He has a target audience and they loved it... simple....
Anon, so what if he is a commercial artist? What does that matter? Some of the rappers we champion were, and are, HUGELY commercial...
He is here to make money? REALLY? half of what hip hop artists talk about is how much money they have, and what they are going to with it. even the great Nas himself....
I dont like soulja boy's stuff, but that doesn't mean he is not hip hop. if it wasnt for hip hop he would be here.
West can say what he wants.. but if soulja boy asks to work with him, will he do it?
I think West is making jokes, but you gotta read the posts on his blog.... too much nut riding!
Doesn't Kanye just like to be contraversial?
But it is an interesting point. Soulja Boy is wack as hell, but you cant knock his hustle. He is from the hood and got all of america and beyond doing his dance and he's made some serious wedge.good on him. he is young and its his interpretaion of what he sees as 'hip hop'. Hip Hop purists are gonna have to get used to this just as house purists have had to over the years. Nobody owns music.Live with it.
THANK YOU! It is hella trendy to bash on soulja boy. Not that some of the arguments are without merit, but overall I think a lot of people just rag on him because he's an easy target. It's so cliche, and Kanye makes some valid points. I get so tired of people trying to slap their personalized definitions on hip-hop, art, life, etc. and expect everyone else to follow suit. Hip hop, since its conception has always been composed with diverse sounds and diverse lyrics, not all of them being deep... Just because you or I don't like it, doesn't mean it isn't hip hop
