I'm really unsure how I feel about this - last year there was a story that McDonalds were paying people for mentioning Big Macs in records which is pretty bloody low. Then Nike had the Classic record with Premo, Nas, Kanye, Rakim & KRS-1, which I have to admit I did like quite a bit but now Smirnoff have a whole set of tracks which they have commissioned. They are reworkings of some truly important hip hop moments - Criminal Minded & The Light amongst other things. You can get them here if you can get passed the annoying flash site
My displeasure falls into two sections first of all why the hell are the guys killing their own records for a bit of money - c'mon guys none of you are broke and secondly when did hip hop just bend over for the man? I'm not against people takin some cash or seeing an opportunity but this is degrading our culture for no foreseeable gain
Am I too upset?

No I dont think your being to upset illsun I can see your point, on one hand its dope to see KRS and Premo, Common and Just Blaze team up but then on the other hand its all for the sake of an ad campaign, but I guess this is the way hip hop has been going for ages now, even back in the day you had Pete Rock and CL Smooth,etc.. doing ad's for Sprite. I had a long discussion about this with my girl the other night while watching this debate on BET about hip hop selling out, and in a lot of ways hip hop has sold its soul but I think thats made a lot of fans (some of which post on here) revert back to the 'underground' and find new acts to get into rather than those that you would find on MTV, Radio 1,etc..
i hate this fact! i d/l "the light" remix or watever u wanna call it about a week ago! my first thought was why the hell did blaze decide to rework a dilla joint wtf.. a very brave/dumb man! and secondly its cack straight cack
im sick of black ppl endorsing fuckin alcohol wtf.. we have a long history with this shit.. common is practically a muslim and yet ur teamin up with smernoff.. it makes no sense!
i wannnnaaaa comment on the song of the week!!! lmfao @ wiley the king of re signing and wearing my gold rolex.. i saw him the other day and quite frankly he scares me! why im not sure!
This shit is silly and unnecessary. I know they aren't that hard up for chips, and if they are, they need to learn about investing and money management and quit pushing corporate crap. What happened to lyricism? It's becoming progressively fewer and farther in between songs that I can actually relate to, give me something to think about, or just straight out blow me away with their creativity.
pfffft *shaking my head, walking away*
...
lol @ the wiley comment and walking away!!!
hahaaha
I'm glad to see that it isn't just me that is vexed by this. OK so my next question is if the track had been fire could (would) we have forgiven them?
nope.....the fact its luke warm doesn't help but even if the track was ill i think there would have been some heat from the hardcore hip hop heads regardless.
Just ask Rakim after the Nike "Clasic" campaign
no ur not too upset. you're right.
the whole point about being an artist is that they are meant to express themselves for themselves and not for commercialism and money they don't need.
